Hollis Garden is a 1.2-acre public garden located in downtown Lakeland, Florida. This Neoclassical garden in Lakeland area is only 1.2 acres, but it feels much larger as one strolls through its winding pathways. This is partially due to the optical illusion created by the variety of garden rooms, each with a distinct theme. A secluded fern and waterlily grotto at the top of the hill closest to the entrance is a wonderful space for thoughtfulness and meditation. You’ll also find an old tree arboretum, a rose garden, and an herb garden. The gardens get more elaborate as they flow down to the lake with chambers decorated in various colors and centered around sod squares that are surrounded by sculptures and fountains. As the gardens approach the renovated 1920s promenade around the lake, the Lakeland swan motif based on swans gifted to the city by Queen Elizabeth in 1957 becomes apparent.

History of Hollis Garden

Opened on December 8th, 2000, Hollis Garden was created as a gift to the city of Lakeland from Edward Hollis, who wanted to provide the community with a place of beauty and respite. Hollis, who passed away in 1999, was a successful businessman and philanthropist in Lakeland. He served on the boards of many organizations, including the Lakeland Economic Development Council, the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce, and United Way. The garden is named in his honor.
